Particle physics give me a hadron…

Title courtesy of these guys

So today Cern started up the LHC. It is a particle accelerator that will launch protons near the speed of light and will smash them into other protons. This will break the protons down into smaller sub-atomic particles. These particles, while only existing for a microseconds before combining back with other larger atomic particles will give scientist a greater understanding of quantum physics. This is enormously exciting to nerds around the world, myself included. While the multi-billion dollar machine did start up for the first time today, the experiments won’t be underway until around October.

If you would like to know a little bit more about how it works, head over to How stuff works dot com. Or just click my conveniently located link. 🙂

And just in case you were wondering…

Has the large hadron collider destroyed the world yet?
